Pilates can help Diastasis Recti Abdominal

Pilates can help Diastasis Recti abdominal prevention and recovery.

Diastasis Recti Abdominal is a condition that occurs when the two sides of the Rectus Abdominal separate along the Linea Alba. DRA is caused by an excess of pressure on the abdominal wall. The condition occurs in both men and women and is often triggered by hormonal changes, a growing uterus and obesity.

The most common cases of DRA is seen in women postpartum. After birth the trauma women’s bodies have tolerated does not give space for bad exercise techniques, over exercising, incorrect lifting and the list goes on. It’s a case of new mums often working incorrectly to get rid of that mummy tummy.

Nowadays DRA is also being seen in women in their 60s and 70s according to a leading expert Caroline Anthony. https://pilatesbridge.com/diastasis-recti-awareness/

Diastasis Recti abdominal can be serious. Causing hernias to chronic back ache. Most of all DRA is difficult and timely to recover from.

The abdominal wall are muscles that support the trunk (thoracic spine) as well give stability to the limbs. A good deal of joint adaptability and stability is necessary. DRA can create instability and therefore difficulty to perform normal tasks not to mention pelvis instability and a lack of strength.

Pilates can help Diastasis Recti Abdominal, how?

In some cases we can´t. Surgery is required. However, in some cases we can. The aim of the game is to tighten the Linea Alba and reduce the space between the Recti Abdominal.

A typical abdominal crunch leads to the recti abdominal muscles to contract and close in on each other. This leaves the Linea Alba loose. In Pilates we use the breathing technique to engage the transverse abdominis muscles. The transverse abdominis muscles then tightens the Linea Alba by separating the Recti abdominal muscles. Job done? No, we can go further and add a mini abdominal crunch while the transverse abdominis muscles are engaged and maximize the effectiveness without adding additional unnecessary pressure.

Many people worsen DRA by exercising badly or over exercising and increasing the gap. For this reason it is advisable to attend Private Pilates classes with an experienced Pilates instructor. Idealistically a DRA patient should be trained by a clinical Pilates instructor with experience teaching pre and post-natal Pilates classes.

In summary Pilates can help Diastasis Recti abdominal reduction because of its breathing technique and Pilates exercise that offer a the correct tension on the recti abdominal while exercising
